Hi there! I’m Cassandre, and today on Caramel Loafing, we’re making an iconic American classic: the Classic BLT Sandwich—a quick and easy sandwich recipe that never goes out of style.
Beloved in both the U.S. and the UK, the BLT gets its name from its three core ingredients: bacon, lettuce, and tomato. While this traditional trio remains unbeatable, creative twists have emerged—like the BLET (with a fried egg) or the BLAT (with avocado).
Although this homemade BLT is easy to make, the key to a delicious result lies in the ingredients. White bread is the most common option, but hearty whole grain or rustic bread can add extra character. Watching your calories? Try leaner bacon. And don’t underestimate the art of slicing tomatoes and layering the ingredients just right—it makes all the difference!
Let’s get started and make the perfect BLT together. I hope you enjoy making it as much as eating it!

Classic BLT Sandwich Recipe
Ingredients
Servings: 1
- 2 slices of bread (white, whole grain, or your favorite variety)
- 3 slices of bacon
- 1–2 leaves of romaine or iceberg lettuce
- 2 slices of tomato (about 1cm thick)
- Freshly ground black pepper, to taste
- 10g (0.35 oz) unsalted butter
- 20g (0.7 oz) mayonnaise
- 10g (0.35 oz) ketchup
- 5g (0.18 oz) Dijon mustard
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 392°F (200°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper and place a wire rack on top.
- Lay the bacon slices on the rack, making sure they don’t overlap. Bake for 12–15 minutes, or until the edges are crisp but the center stays slightly tender. You can also pan-fry them if preferred.
- Transfer the cooked bacon to a paper towel-lined plate to absorb excess grease. Season lightly with black pepper.
- Slice the tomato into 1cm-thick rounds and place them on a paper towel. Pat dry with another paper towel to reduce excess moisture.
- In a small bowl, mix the mayonnaise, ketchup, and Dijon mustard until smooth. This will be your sandwich sauce.
- Heat a skillet over medium-low heat and melt the butter. Toast both sides of the bread until golden brown and crisp.
- To assemble: spread a thin layer of sauce on both slices of toasted bread. Layer the bacon first, followed by the tomato slices, drizzle with more sauce, and finish with folded lettuce. Top with the second slice of bread.
- Cut the sandwich in half and serve immediately.
